Almost 20 days in to the New Year, and you should already be (or close to) putting your goals and plans in motion. 2018 was non-stop for me, intentionally. I launched a new business, parent company to Lafayette Media, Lafayette Creative Group, Inc., and I had to promote every month (weekly, sometimes daily) through email or social media. The great thing about that is, I have the background, ambition, motivation and qualifications to promote, market and brand Lafayette Creative Group. However, it would have been much better for me, if I could have hired an expert or agency to manage that part of the business on my behalf.
If you do not have the budget to hire a freelance publicist or PR agency, the most beneficial actions you can take are research (never ending), reading books, listening to a few audio books, attending networking events and workshops, or viewing online webinars and classes. It sounds like a lot, and it is, but with a plan (putting daily / weekly / monthly goals on calendar...don't forget to add the alerts/reminders!), some patience and determination, you can make it enjoyable AND make it work for you (your schedule and lifestyle). ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! I hope this gives you some insight, reinforcement and encouragement to stay on track with your goals for the month, quarter and/or year. If you have a business, effective PR is necessary. Why? Because it can often times, "make or break" your brand / business. Public Relations aka PR, is a must when promoting an event, a new brand, product, campaign, new executive to the team, or business. From the press release, editorial feature, to the advertising campaign (i.e. in-store product launches, commercials and print ads) and / or frequent social media marketing campaigns, each step is important in the marketing and promotion process that ultimately leads to brand recognition and awareness.
Failing to promote to your intended audience, is sure to guarantee you will NOT get the positive response you anticipated. Honestly, contrary to what many believe, most people are not savvy when it comes to marketing and promotions, and need to hire an individual or team to get the job done...the right way. We, and I include myself in this, make the mistake of attempting to wear many hats, when we need to focus on other business at hand and learn to delegate projects so nothing is overlooked or "falls through the cracks." This is where things can go right or all the way wrong; destroying any possible opportunities of making that positive first impression. As an entrepreneur, you should have the basic knowledge of what public relations, marketing and promotions entail, because that will help you understand the logistics of what the end goal is: profit. Ultimately, we promote in order to generate business, better known as, income. With that said, you should absolutely know how to promote and brand your business, especially if you are a new or small business owner. If you do not have a large budget to hire an expert or team, you will have the task of creating and developing ideas and strategies to effectively establish your brand. It takes a lot of time and research, but if you read and make every effort to utilize social media on a daily basis, you will quickly learn what it takes to successfully build your brand. In the beginning, there will be many late nights, and weekends, spent working (more often than not) until the wee hours of the morning, with only 2-4 hours of sleep. You have to put in the hours to see the results and fruits of your labor. When clients come to me wanting PR and Marketing services, I have a proposal outlining what I hope to accomplish. Most do not understand the time that goes into generating ideas, developing creative strategies and content that will attract your intended audience, and keep them coming back for more.
